Public spaces hold tremendous significance in our daily lives as they embody the essence of collective memories and experiences. On one hand, public spaces significantly influence society, while on the other hand, they leave a lasting impression on individuals. Recognizing the pivotal role of public space in shaping the quality of life, it becomes imperative to improve its overall quality, thereby enhancing the well-being of citizens.

Moreover, public spaces serve as repositories of narratives. These narratives intertwine with the physical sites, accumulating layers of history, organizing sequences, and ingraining themselves within the materials and processes of urban design. Stories find diverse avenues of expression within public spaces. In this research, we delve into the phenomenon of Narrative-Matrix, which involves the production and reception of stories, intertwining with social life. The Narrative-Matrix is comprised of four main components: time components, timelessness components, semantic components, and transitional components.

Additionally, this research endeavors to draw upon language theory to formulate a comprehensive design and development strategy. Through an exploration of architectural narratives, we have developed a design strategy process that aims to create impactful transformations. This design strategy process has been employed in revitalizing the Plasco complex, a building tragically destroyed by fire in 2017, with the objective of reimagining Tehran’s urban fabric.

The analysis of the Plasco complex invokes three distinct types of memories: the memories of Plasco’s past, the memories associated with the Plasco building itself, and the memories related to the fire incident. By weaving these memories together, we aim to construct a new narrative that embraces the rich heritage while embracing future aspirations.

Through our project, we seek to redefine public spaces, making them more engaging, functional, and resonant with the stories they encapsulate. By leveraging the power of Narrative-Matrix and employing a comprehensive design strategy, we envision a future where public spaces serve as dynamic platforms for community interaction, cultural preservation, and collective identity.

Interactive Video (Urban Designer Perspective) -Shaping the Narrative: Design for a City’s Soul

This interactive video explores the power of public spaces in shaping our collective memories and influencing the quality of life in a city. Imagine yourself as an urban designer tasked with revitalizing a public space that holds significant meaning for the community.
The Challenge:
The video opens with a thought-provoking introduction on the importance of public spaces and their impact on social life. We delve into the concept of the “womb narrative,” a framework for understanding the stories and memories embedded within a particular location.
Your Role:
Throughout the video, you’ll be presented with key decision points. By making choices, you’ll directly influence the design of the public space.
The Choices:
Pre-existing Memories:
Emphasize the historical significance of the location before development.
Focus on the lives and stories of those who frequented the space in the past.
Memories of the Site:
Highlight the architectural features and character of the former building.
Create a space that reflects the building’s legacy and impact on the community.
Memories of Transformation:
Acknowledge the event that forever changed the space.
Design a space that fosters resilience and healing.
The Outcome:
Based on your choices, the video will showcase a potential design for the revitalized public space. See how your decisions shape the narrative and create a space that resonates with the community’s memories.
